Why We Card Everyone: Our 21+ Policy Explained
Being asked for ID is a normal part of an adult-only store’s age-verification process. At Bahama Mama Bellaire, our policy is straightforward: 21+ with valid ID, every customer, every visit. Consistency helps our team apply the same standard to everyone.
Why 21?
Federal law prohibits retailers from selling tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to anyone under 21. The FDA’s Tobacco 21 guidance explains the federal minimum age and ID requirements. Texas DSHS also requires age verification for consumable hemp sales; consult its current program guidance.
Our store policy applies across categories. Checking every customer is our consistent operating practice; it should not be confused with a claim that every product category has identical legal requirements.
Why check everyone?
Appearance is not reliable. Age should not be guessed from how someone looks. A consistent ID check gives staff a clear procedure instead of asking them to make personal judgments.
The same rule is fairer. First-time visitors and regular customers follow the same process. Familiarity with a customer does not replace a valid ID check.
Adult-only access matters. These products belong with adults. Staff follow the policy as part of their responsibility to the business and community.
What ID to bring
Bring a current, unexpired, government-issued photo ID. Examples include a state driver license or identification card, a U.S. passport or passport card, or a U.S. military ID. The document must be readable and allow staff to verify identity and age.
What we cannot accept
- A photograph or screenshot instead of the physical ID.
- An expired document.
- An ID that appears altered, damaged, or unreadable.
- A student card, work badge, or another non-government document.
Frequently asked questions
I am clearly over 21. Why do I need ID?
Because our policy is to check everyone. Applying one rule avoids inconsistent judgments and is not personal.
I left my ID in the car or at home. Can you make an exception?
No. Our team needs to see valid ID, including for regular customers.
Can someone else purchase for an underage person?
No. We decline transactions intended to bypass age restrictions.
What if the ID expired recently?
Our policy requires an unexpired ID. Please bring a current document.
Make the check straightforward
- Have the physical ID ready at the counter.
- Check its expiration date in advance.
- Allow the team time to read and verify it.
- Treat staff respectfully while they follow the same process for everyone.
Responsibility continues at home
Keep adult-use products in original packaging and secure them away from children and pets. Edibles and beverages may resemble everyday food or drink, so careful separation and storage matter.
